Giro d’Italia 2019, stage five results and standings: Pascal Ackermann conquers wet conditions to claim his second stage win

Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) powered through the rain to win the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia in Terracina, timing his final sprint perfectly to beat Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) into second.

Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) claimed third ahead of Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal), while Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) finished safely in the peloton to preserve his overall lead, now 35 seconds over Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott). Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) is a further four seconds behind in third.

The Giro continues on Thursday with the 233km run from Cassino to San Giovanni Rotondo and concludes with a time trial in Verona on June 2.
